Spiritual Sunday, Suffering

As the fall semester has begun at Nexus, we're looking at the book of Romans.

This past week we talked about hanging in there when things are not going your way. It's definitely difficult.

Why does God let bad things happen? If he's a good God, why would he let things like (fill in the blank) happen?

If you're a parent, you might understand it this way...

We take our kids to the doctor and sometimes they have to get shots. To them, that's the most awful thing that could happen! Why would a mommy who loves her baby let some crazy nurse poke her child in the arm with a NEEDLE and inject who knows what?? Sometimes they get a fever after or an achy muscle. Why would a loving mom allow this to happen to her little child??

See where I'm going? Mommys see the big picture. Even though our babies don't understand why we'd let this happen to them, we see the big picture. A little pain now can save them from life-threatening diseases later. They don't get it, they don't see it, but we do. We allow them to suffer a little so they don't have to suffer A LOT.

It's the same with God. He let's us suffer a little to help us so that we don't have to suffer a lot...and maybe sometimes we do suffer a lot but ultimately, he sees the big picture. He knows more, he knows better. We need to trust him like our babies trust us!

Romans 5
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
